@nicholaspatten Video editor, Graphic/Web Design, Snowboard & Ski Designer

by richardm on June 29, 2009

Q1 Real name / Twitter user name

Nicholas Patten / @nicholaspatten

Q2 Location

I live in New York, NY

Q3 Website

www.nicholaspatten.com

Q4 Bio

I’m a Video Editor, Graphic/Web Designer, Snowboard/Ski Designer, IT Director, And I currently work with @RedLifeIntl and @IRGnews

Q5 When did you start using Twitter and how were you introduced to it?

I started using Twitter in January of 2008. Steve Melfi (@melfi) introduced me to the site before it got to it’s “mainstream” status.

Q6 What are the main reasons you use Twitter (e.g. business, marketing, fun, community etc)?

At first I started using Twitter to just show my work and to get it out to people in a new way. Then I began sharing great art/video/tutorials/anything design of other artists. After getting a few thank you emails from the artists who I linked my followers to I kept sending out a large amount of tweets to other portfolios. Then it turned into tutorials, architecture, design, motion videos, illustrators, and so on.

Q7 What aspects of Twitter do you love?…

Well obviously the sharing part, the networking, talking to people that have the same interests on the other side of the world, and getting information faster than ever before.

Q8 …and dislike (if any)?

This is an easy question, Spam Direct Messages and Spam accounts. I hope Twitter can come up with a solution to spam, deleting spam DM’s has become like ignoring spam friend requests on MySpace a few years back.

Q9 If you could make changes to Twitter what would they be?

Read question 8, spam

Q10 What Twitter apps do you use to Tweet from? (e.g. main Twitter site/ Twitterriffic / Tweetdeck etc

I’ve tried them all. I used to use Tweetburner to send out links, but now I use Bit.ly since they have accomplished some of the idea that I posted about a while back and I’m sure there is more to come from them.

Q11 What are your criteria for following someone?

I’m open to following accounts that aren’t spam. Are you more likely to follow someone who only follows 80 people or are you more likely to follow someone who follows a lot of people back? Common sense.

Q12 What type of behaviour would make you unfollow someone?

I guess accounts that send out repetitive tweets.

Q13 What tips do you have for newbies?

It depends on what you want to use Twitter for. I use Twellow to find interesting people with the same interests as mine.

Q14  How do you find new people to follow (e.g. Twellow, Summize, friends of friends etc)?

Oops, read question 13. :)

Q15  Qwitter – do you use it? If someone unfollows you do you reciprocate?

I used to use it, but it doesn’t work for me anymore. Every once in a while I unfollow those who have followed and then unfollowed. :)

Q16 If you agree that Twitter should be monetized do you have any suggestions how?

I don’t think that links should be monetized. If anything it’s great for networking and meeting the right people who can help you out in your career. Therefore getting freelance jobs off of your skills and from networking with the right people. I’m all about sharing and I know I’m not alone. I think Twitter is changing how open we are with strangers for the better.

Q17  Who do you enjoy following the most?

That’s a tough question, of course all of friends I know in person, I enjoy following musicians who interact with their listeners, designers who share how they created something, and people who know what they are talking about.

Q18 How do you see the future of Twitter?

No idea, it’s so versatile and I really like the fact that we make it what we want it to be. It’s obvious that Twitter has had a huge impact on how other social networks are designing their new versions. In a way it’s making me want to stick with Twitter even more. We’ll see what happens.
